The Art of Bali Painting

Painting has a long tradition in Bali Arts. Until the start of the 20th century scenes from Hindu epics were the dominat topics for the local Balinese painters and illustrators. With these scenes, the painters decoration altar, bamboo vessels, head boards for princely bed chambers and in paricular they were expected to illustrate astrological wall hanging.

Then in the early of 1900s foreign influences reached Bali. The use of asian symbols in the works of European painters who moved to Bali created a new trend for asian-influence art. Today there is much wider range of artistic expression and several different styles of paintings rival in Bali. The Ubud style is influenced bythe western us of perspective and everyday-life subjects while the Batuan style involves hundreds of intrically painted scenes of Balinese life. Also well known are the Keliki style, the Pengosekan style and the Kamasan style.
